About this course
About this course
Black Belt is the senior practitioner qualification in Lean Six Sigma, covering the methodology at the depth expected of improvement programme leaders and mentors of lower-level Belts. This Black Belt upgrade programme is designed for experienced Green Belts ready to take on that senior responsibility, delivered through live virtual classroom sessions.
Who should attend
The course is aimed at experienced Green Belts moving into continuous improvement leadership roles, senior technical managers with substantial improvement project experience, and consultants supporting multi-project client improvement programmes. Delegates should hold a recognised Green Belt qualification and have practical experience of leading at least one substantial DMAIC improvement project to completion. The programme is not suitable for delegates without prior Green Belt work.
What the programme covers
Content covers advanced statistical techniques including hypothesis testing, regression analysis, design of experiments and advanced measurement system analysis. Sessions cover programme-level improvement design, project portfolio management, the mentoring of Green and Yellow Belts, change management at organisational scale, and the integration of improvement programmes with wider strategic objectives. The programme addresses the particular challenges of Black Belt work, including maintaining methodology rigour under commercial pressure, leading projects across multiple sites or business units, and delivering programme-level benefit realisation.
Assessment and certification
Delegates complete a written examination, a practical project assignment and an assessed mentoring exercise. A pass earns the recognised Black Belt qualification, suitable evidence of senior-level Lean Six Sigma competence for programme leadership roles.
Course format and delivery
The programme runs as a live virtual classroom across multiple sessions, allowing delegates substantial time to develop the assignment and mentoring components between teaching days. Delivery combines methodology teaching with advanced case study discussion, structured peer review of project drafts and practical exercises in statistical analysis and programme design.
Why this matters
Black Belt qualification signals senior improvement programme capability and supports progression into continuous improvement director, operational excellence lead and senior operations roles. Delegates who complete the qualification handle programme-level improvement with substantially greater authority and build a foundation for progression to Master Black Belt level. The qualification is also increasingly referenced by consulting firms, major manufacturers and technical service providers when appointing senior improvement specialists. The programme pairs with the Green Belt qualification as a prerequisite and with the wider eLearning catalogue for flexible continuing development of specific advanced topics.
