About this course

About this course

Storage and distribution sites occupy a critical link in the food supply chain, and the BRCGS Global Standard for Storage and Distribution Issue 4 is the benchmark for competent operation. This two-day virtual programme teaches site teams how to interpret and evidence every clause of the Standard in a warehousing, transport or contract logistics setting.

Who should attend

The course is designed for warehouse managers, distribution centre technical leads, quality managers, operations managers and shift supervisors. Staff preparing for a first certification audit or for upgrade from Issue 3 find the content particularly valuable. The programme is equally relevant to third-party logistics operators serving multiple food customers, to in-house warehousing teams at food manufacturing sites, and to consultants preparing to support logistics operators through certification for the first time.

What the programme covers

Sessions cover senior management commitment, the hazard and risk analysis system for storage and distribution, quality management, site security and food defence, hygiene and housekeeping, good operating practices, temperature control, transport and vehicle management, contract services and staff training. Time is given to the particular evidence challenges that arise when a site handles product belonging to multiple customers with different specifications. The programme addresses how to manage temperature-controlled chain integrity across multi-stop deliveries, how to handle customer-specific additional requirements without creating parallel systems, and how to evidence site security in sprawling warehouse footprints with multiple access points.

Assessment and certification

A written exam at the end of day two confirms competence. Delegates who pass receive the official BRCGS Certificate of Achievement, recognised across the logistics sector as evidence of Standard-specific training.

Course format and delivery

The programme runs over two consecutive days in a live virtual format. Sessions combine clause-level teaching with worked examples from real storage and distribution certifications, small-group discussion and Q and A with the trainer. Delegates receive supporting materials and example procedures for use after the programme.

Why this matters

Storage and distribution operators face rising expectations from food and drink customers, particularly around temperature integrity, traceability and security. A team trained on the Standard handles customer audits, certification visits and contract tenders with substantially less rework. It also reduces the operational cost of responding to customer-specific technical questionnaires, many of which map directly to the Standard. The course is often taken alongside the Storage and Distribution Auditor Training for internal audit teams and the Agents and Brokers programme for operations that combine warehousing with trading activity. For wider compliance capability, the BRCGS HACCP programme is often a useful complement.
